Monthly Wrap Ups

December Wrap Up // the one where 2020 is FINALLY over

2020. *dramatic sigh* Heh… what a year. It tested patience, proved all the outlandish sci-fi technology dependent societies are 100% more realistic than we thought, and basically wrecked havoc. I’m just glad its over.

As far as months go, December was pretty solid. I read 33 books this month. I did manage to reach my goal of 288 books (it was close, but we made it!). I would like to take this moment to thank short stories, graphic novels, and novellas for their contributions to my goal. Also shout out to my introverted (read: somewhat antisocial) tendencies. You all have helped me achieve my 2020 reading goal and I am forever thankful.

3🌟 A Curse So Dark And Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer

Groundhog Day meets Beauty and the Beast

3🌟 A Heart So Fierce and Broken by Brigid Kemmerer

The ending— NOOOO

3🌟 Legend by Marie Lu

it seemed very average

5🌟Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

Did I reread this book for the third time even though I’m in the middle of 6 other books?? Haha no. Not me. *whispers* yes….

1🌟 New Year’s Kiss by Lee Matthews

The second hand embarrassment for the characters is strong with this one

Sarah did not just kill off a supporting character for main character’s development. No. no she did not.

3 🌟The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan

Yea this is still my least favorite book in the series

1 🌟 Kissing Lessons by Sophie Jordan

Entered: wanting something cute and fluffy

Exited: RAGE

I can’t tell if the writing is chaotic genius or a hot mess??

So much drama… but I’m kind of invested in it?

Why are there so many of these books… I swear they keep multiplying

a little mermaid retelling with pirates and sword fighting galore
murder mystery but with Thomas Cresswell and historic setting
boarding schools and hidden passageways galore
lets just say I’ve learned a few things in the last few months
bookish magic with a side of sass and demons that turn into cats
beauty and the beast retelling with a princess from DC and angst
thank y’all so much!
follow this mini tbr I did not.
  • A book review that I wrote got published in the school newspaper. It was a very different format and style than what I’m used to doing here, but I’m really excited by the result.
  • I finally figured out how to do the spoiler alert ma bobs. Shout out to Google for that.

Also not to be a statistics maniac or anything, but I hit some milestones that I’m super proud of. Thank y’all for reading my posts and chatting about books with me!

  • 1.2k on Instagram. Um what?
  • 100+ followers on the blog *AHHHHHH*

Marta @ Monogamist Reader wrote a fantastic review of Namestake by Adrienne Young. I can’t wait to read this one when it comes out and this review only got me more excited!

Cossette @ Tea Time Lit wrote an important discussion about trigger warnings. She brought up a lot of really excellent points. I have been working on going back and including trigger warnings on all of my old reviews as well as my new ones.

Amodini @ Amodini’s Musings wrote an amazing review of Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo. The voice and authenticity in this review is stunning.

Cat @ This Is One For The Books compared book covers to world famous paintings. I loved the creativity and I can not unsee it now!

Emily @ A Short Book Lover and Sasha @ Sasha and Amber Read recommend sapphic books based on evermore songs. Thank you to both of you for making my ever ending tbr even longer. I’m super excited to check some of these out!

24hr. YA Book Blog discussed YA Book Comparisons by Authors Of Color and Unfair Critiques of BIPOC Work. A must read.

Ashmita @ The Fictional Journal shared her thoughts on They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera. You could feel her love for the book radiating off the screen and I’m more excited than ever to finally read it.

  • The semester is officially over. I’m glad to have a bit of a break.
  • Evermore!!! *AHHHH* I am obsessed. I will be doing the Evermore book tag in the upcoming weeks!
  • I read my first graphic novel in YEARS.  I was surprised by how much I liked it and will be reading more in the future. Related: anyone have any favorite graphic novels they would like to recommend??
  • I had a lovely Christmas with my family. We exchanged gifts, ate cinnamon rolls, and watched the Star Wars movies in chronological order (the last step lasted multiple days, but we started them at least).
  • Thank you to my lovely friend Kate for gifting me Gilded Wolves and Spin the Dawn for Secret Santa. I’ve wanted to read them both forever so I’m so glad I can finally sink my claws into my very own copies.
  • I also was lucky enough to receive the Truly Devious trilogy as well as A Question For Holmes. Always excited to get some books!
  • I created a brand new playlist called “write like the wind bullseye” because my voice could not physically handle shouting Hamilton lyrics 24/7. I’m feeling very accomplished because I have never created my own playlist before and its like a rite of passage to teendom.
  • I got spoiled for Heartless on Twitter and I am not ok.

So, that’s my December for ya. My fingers are crossed for a better year in 2021!

How was your month? Your year? Read any good books? What are your favorite songs from Evermore? Do you have any graphic novels that you recommend?

  1. Aaah I’m glad you like Fence screeeeeee. I hope you get/read the fourth book soonnnnnn. And then we can both beg for a fifth book–there’s no news of when it comes out!
Oh my gosh you read a lot of books this month. Why did you keep going with the Imagine me series if you didn’t like it?
Graphic novel recs…well I’d always recommend the graphic novels by Raina Telegmeir (I don’t know if I spelled her last name right). Smile, Sisters, Drama, Ghosts, they’re good. Also if you’re looking for a pretty diverse one I’d suggest Snapdragon.
Wait okay is cinnamon rolls a thing everyone does on christmas??? My family does it too and I thought it was just us but I’ve been hearing of other people doing it now too…

    1. The 4th book is sitting on my table begging to be opened. But I am showing a sliver of self control and tying to finished the other 5 books I’m in the middle of before I dive in. I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be able to wait before I give in and read it lol. I haven’t even read the 4th one and I know I want a 5th one. ALWAYS WANT MORE FENCE
ahh yea. I ate, slept, and read books for all of my winter break. Thats it. Nothing else haha.
I thought the original trilogy in the Shatter Me series was solid. It was like the superhero meets dystopia meets mind control. There was so. much. drama. And not the best world building which kept me from rating it higher, but as a whole I still enjoyed it. The second part of the series is where it went downhill (keep in mind half of them are novellas (the ones with shut eyes on the cover)). The story was going downhill (for me at least) but I couldn’t look away. It was ridiculous but I wanted to know what was going to happen.
Ooh thank you for the recs! I will def be checking them out!
I thought it was just my family too, but apparently a bunch of people do it to?!?!? I did not realize this… Its always been a tradition of ours to wake up and make cinnamon rolls on Christmas morning (fresh cinnamon rolls is the best smell EVER)

      1. EEEE I HOPE YOU READ IT SOON but I understand wanting to wait. I would have had no self control though, lol. heeeeeey that’s what I did over winter break as well. I only finished….five books though. Hmm okay fine that’s not too bad.
Huh okay. I had no idea that it was originally a trilogy. So is it one of those books where the author writes the trilogy and then decides taht they want to keep adding to the world and then it all goes downhill from there? I do not like that at all. Or when an author writes a book that just ends fine on the first book but then they go and stick an epilogue on that throws that all in the garbage.
        I hope you enjoy them!
Huh okay. That is interesting. Well, cinnamon rolls ARE good so I don’t blame anyone who does it ha ha!

        1. I’m done with this self control nonsense. I’m just going to start it haha.
Yep, it was one of those books. I have yet to find a series where I liked the add ons. Like please stop at the trilogy. I had my ending, I was able to accept the ending so please just call it quits. Annnd then 5 years later more books get added to the series and I’m internally screaming.
          and yess cinnamon rolls >>>

          1. LOL I hope you enjoy it!!!
Ugh. That’s one of my pet peeves, and also books that are totally just fine as standalones and then there’s like an epilogue that’s basically like, ‘this enemy that they defeated is actually still alive and ready to fight mwa ha ha.’ Just…UGH. Especially because I don’t like the enemy regeneration trope. Nope nope nope

  2. Ok so wow! You read pretty much all the shatter me books. That’s so amazing, I could never read that much! Secondly, I was planning on reading New Year’s Kiss by Lee Matthews but your review has convinced me otherwise. And, published in the school newspaper?! I am beyond proud. You did amazing this year, and I hope 2021 treats you incredibly. Also, you were one of the first people to follow my blog, so thank you for that! Ughhh I’m so sorry you were spoiled for Heartless!!! 😭 Hopefully you can still read it and enjoy it?? 🥺 And congrats so much on 100+ followers, that’s such a huge achievement 🥳

    1. haha shoutout to winter break for all the free time to read 😂
Ahh me too. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it brought so much pain and joy at the time. I can not imagine those poor souls who had to wait YEARS for Rebel to get their happy ending.
Haha thank you! I take waaaay too much joy in coming up with those lol
ughhh tragic, it is. I will still read it and hopefully love it. The amount of books that have been spoiled for me because of twitter, bookstagram, or my personal favorite looking up fanart before I finish the book is far too many ugh
Thank you so much for reading Abby! Best wishes for 2021
