Monthly Wrap Ups

March Wrap Up

Oy! March is over! As a whole I’d probably rate March 4/5 stars. I mean…

  • The weather towards the beginning of the month was absolute GARBAGE (read: snow) but turned it around towards the end. Partial credit.
  • I unleashed some inner chill during the month and the lack of motivation and slight burnout was no longer plaguing my every thought. Definite win.
  • Books. Lot’s of books. Add points, game over.

Anywayyy before I create an aggressively long list, let’s hop right in.

This book has been removed from the wrap-up because the author is problematic. I will not be supporting Jay Kristoff in any way, shape, or form. I encourage you to inform yourself on the reasons for him being problematic and avoiding financially supporting him and his book in the future.

fun fact: you should read books in order (NOT 113231)

Honestly, the posting whenever I felt like it worked a lot better. I wasn’t nearly as rigid with my Tuesday-Friday schedule and I think that allowed me to have more fun with what I was writing and enjoyed the whole ~experience~ a bit more. I ended up writing 10 posts, mostly reviews, but also a few tags sprinkled in there as well. You can click on any of the banners and it should bring you to the post!

Also, a bit of a question for all you lovely people out there. I tried a bit of a new review format with People Like Us as well as You Have A Match. It was more yay and nay bullet point style, rather than a more flow-y paragraph. Is there one you liked better than the other?? Any tips for improving either one of them? Any feedback you could give would be greatly appreciated : )

  • This month I’ve been participating in a 100 page challenge. Basically, the goal is to read everyday with the aim being 100 pages. I’m honestly quite surprised by how well I’ve been able to keep up and of all the reading that I’ve gotten done!
  • The speech season is officially over. That being said, there still is Nationals happening in June. The qualifiers for that tournament were during March and I’m super excited that I qualified and will be competing in a duet!
  • Fun fact about April: I really love musical theater. I’ve been in a couple shows, but my first love is listening to the soundtracks. Partly because I can’t dance worth a lick, and partly because I can walk around the house and yelling “ITS A MUSICAL, A MUSICAL, NOTHING’S AS AMAZING AS A MUSICAL” while pretending that I know how to tap. Peak entertainment right there. Anyway, I’m on a team writing sketch comedy for the transitions (because its a online/in person/hybrid musical) and I’m so happy with how they are turning out.
  • I also have been driving a lot lately. I got my permit a few months ago, but have I actually been driving?? The answer is no. Until now. I’ve mastered the art of the traffic lights and can go through the library pick up line, so I’m feeling pretty accomplished lol.
  • One last thing! @asher_reads over on instagram and I have been collaborating on a read-a-thon for the month of April. I had a blast planning everything and even got to dabble in some drawing skills with the logo/design/thing. For more details, check out my post below! I’d love to have y’all aboard!

Starting off strong, I loved all of the posts for International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month!

  • Bertie @ Luminosity Library recommends 10 Amazing Sapphic Fantasy Books. Thank you for making my TBR that much longer, I am so hyped to read some of these! Especially A Dark and Hollow Star by Ashley Shuttleworth… sounds like something right up my alley!
  • Saniya @ Sunny Side Reviews recommends 5 Novels to Celebrate International Women’s Day With! Saniya always has the best recs, so I’m looking forward to the day when my hold of Six Angry Girls get’s in!

Also new in March, I might have become slightly obsessed with zodiac signs. Thank you to all the zodiac-lovers in the musical group chat for starting me on that particular binge. And of course, no obsession would be complete without corresponding book recs.

  • Shreshtha @ A Book and A Dream recommends 5 Books Every Aries Should Read. I am in fact an Aries, but I’ve yet to read any of these. Definitely some lovely recs for my ever growing tbr!
  • Also, Alex @ The Scribe Owl has been working on this awesome Zodiac Series! I’m specifically going to shoutout the Book Recs for Aries just because I am one (I don’t share all the traits, but a few definitely ring true lol). Do go check out the series if you’re interested in their recs per sign!!

Tropes are one of the main reason I pick up a book. Fake dating? I’m in? Academic rivals-to-lovers? Sign me up. Found family? Yes, please. I absolutely adored these recommendation lists based on the found family trope!

Okey dokey I’m ditching my grouping strategy and I’m just going to add some of my other favorites. It seemed like a better idea, but now it’s 9:30 the night of the 31st and I’m regretting my poor procrastination life choices.

  • I forgot to include this lovely post by Marta @ Monogamist Reader in my February Wrap Up! I’m 110% here for these Lesser Known The Beauty and the Beast Retellings! I’ve yet to read a Beauty and the Beast retelling that i’ve fallen head over heels for, but whenever I ask for recs I get a loud chorus of ACOTAR. Like thanks, but I think I’ve heard of that one before. I’m so hyped to try out some of these Beauty and the Beast retellings that exist more under the radar. Thank you for compiling this amazing list!

  • 90% of the reading I do is in the electronic format, truly, ebooks changed the way I read. I absolutely loved and related to many parts of How Kindle Changed my Reading Life by Mary @ Tea Time Lit!

  • Nothing drives me more insane than Goodreads summaries. The amount of times it a) spoils things b) screws over the pacing in the entire book or c) is absolutely worthless and tells me nothing is absolutely enraging. Charvi @ It’s Not Just Fiction wrote an amazing post about What She Likes To See In Book Blurbs. Love the points made here.

  • TikTok is the master thief of my time during quarantine, closely followed by Pinterest. There is a huge booktok community going on over there, so it was really interesting to read Siena @ Booksophobia’s post Is TikTok the Next Major Bookish Social Media??

  • There is no better feeling than hearing someone loved a book you recommended to them! I was so so so happy to hear that Karla @ Another Bookworm picked up The Shadows Between Us and enjoyed it just as much as I did. Do check out her amazing review of the book, decked out with her very own, and incredibly unique, rating system!

  • Phoenix @ Books With Wings wrote a really interesting discussion post about Teens in YA. It was a really interesting discussion post and brought up a bunch of really interesting talking points!

  • Shadow and Bone Trailer, but now I have context. Also the official trailer. The amount of times I have rewatched both is honestly embarrassing at this point, but it’s fine, because April is almost here and the show will be out so soon!!!!!
  • Spring Break was towards the end of the month. Very nice mental break from everything, and a very good opportunity to catch up on my mounding stack of library books that is silently staring at me from the corner.
  • Fun fact: I am a major sweet tooth. Well, now it’s ice cream season once again! The ice cream shop I work at opened back up for the season and it’s really good to be back!
  • I’m keeping this section short for now because it is officially wayyy later than I intended and I would really love to publish before the clock strikes midnight.

Y’all. This post got really long, really fast. Whoops. Watch out Phoenix @ Words with Wings, I’m coming for your aggressively long wrap up crown haha. So yea, basically that was my March (in like 1000 some words, but we’ll take it). I said it towards the beginning and I’ll say it again, a solid 4/5 stars. And with that full circle closure, we’re calling this March Wrap Up a wrap.

What is your Zodiac sign? Does it fit you? How was your March? Read anything interesting? What was your top read of the month??

  1. Thank for linking to my post! I’m glad you enjoy the zodiac series; I’m really proud of them. 😊

You wrote this whole long post about books and somehow all I took out of it is ice cream. THANK GOODNESS FOR ICE CREAM SEASON! πŸ˜‚

    1. for sure! I’m vibing with the whole series so hard— I’m definitely checking out other books recommended for other zodiac because they are sorted by certain traits/vibes! absolutely love how you did that!

ahaha, as you should. YESSS thank goodness for ice cream season! important life question: favorite flavor?? thank you so much for reading!!

  4. Loved this wrap-up April! I know, Aurora Burning’s ending was heartbreaking and shattering. Like, why would you end it like that??
I’ve watched both the trailers of Shadow and Bone so many times, that I can’t even count anymore lmao.
Anyway, it’s awesome that you had an amazing month! Happy reading!

  5. Nuh uh, you’re NEVER catching up to me. I had to split my wrap up into TWO PARTS to make sure that people don’t give up halfway through on mine haha.
Anyways, it looks like you had a great month! Haha yeah Shadow and Bone really isn’t the best but KING OF SCARS IS WORTH IT. And thanks for mentioning my post! I’m not gonna share my zodiac but I most certainly DONT fit it haha.

    1. if you say so… I was going pretty strong with 1k+++ in this post but I’m building up for even bigger in April lol. all hail the might two-part month wrap up. I can only aspire to write a wrap up that long lol.
I AM SO EXCITED TO START IT AHHHH! once I drag through Ruin and Rising. and finish my reread of both crow books. But then. Then I am VERY hyped. yesss for sure! I couldn’t not include it, loved reading it. oop well I guess it’s a bit of a hit or miss for accuracy lol.

      1. Haha okay….we’ll see if you catch me, but…I guess I’m going to just have to make my wrap ups even longer if you ever catch up lol.
I HOPE YOU LOVE IT WHEN YOU DO!!! There are a few people who really don’t because of a few things that happen but overall I just think it was a very good book! Nikolai is awesome.

              1. Aaaah, I see haha yeah. You don’t technically need to read SoC and CK to read KoS (though some of the characters in SoC are in book two of KoS). But haha it’s most certainly a process.
Related: the shadow and bone show came out today and I haven’t watched it but I watched the trailer and the teaser and I LITERALLY CANNOT WAIT.

                1. ooo good to know. i probs should have just pushed through ruin and rising but i was so insanely bored and just couldn’t. hopefully i’ll be able to read KoS in the next few days or so.
omg i’m literally watching it right now. i’m like 28 minutes into the second one and ITS SO EXCITING AHHHHH

                  1. Ouch yeah that whole series is super boring. Yes, I hope you get to it!
WHAT AAAAH. I can’t find anyone to watch it with and my mom doesn’t want me watching a whole bunch by myself (plus, I basically only ever watch shows with other people and now I find watching them alone to be boring haha)

                    1. haha you’re not wrong. not gonna like i’m kind of vibing with the show, less whining on alina’s part and more actions
AHH SAME. i’m literally sitting all by myself with my popcorn lol. it’s a bit depressing to be honest but my family doesn’t want to watch it with me. i guess i’ll just have to scream about it with people on the internet lol.

                      Liked by 1 person

                    2. Yeah, I’ve been talking with another friend who says that the show is pretty good, yeah that Alina is better and that Mal is better as well.
Haha yeah I usually use Teleparty to watch shows with friends but theres no one here tonighttttt. i made plans for tomorrow so im just sitting here staring at the baseball website for any baseball news lol.

                    3. ah yes that is very true. it honestly helps that the show is in 3rd person rather than first! ooo that’s so smart. none of my friends want to watch my “nerdy” show with me. truly tragic. ahaha well at least you have something lined up for tomorrow and baseball news to keep you busy!

  6. Great wrap up April! Thank you for mentioning my post, you’re always so kind! πŸ’žπŸ’ž I’ve been meaning to read Ashley Poston’s series, but from the looks of it, it seems fairly average so I might have to rethink that decision. Unfortunately I changed my A Pho Love Story rating down to 3.5 stars, so I totally get why you’d rate it at 3 stars. Nevertheless it was still pretty cute. I should seriously read the whole Aurora Rising trilogy! I’ve heard great things of it. Is it a steampunk novel? And congrats on debate! I wish you all the best!! πŸ’–πŸ’– I hope April treats you well! (Pun intended?)

    1. thank you so much Saniya! for sure, I absolutely loved reading it and grabbing all the great recs! honestly Geekerella is my favorite (4 stars and three rereads) and is such a comfort read. it’s by no means revolutionary, but its a bit of nerdy joy to fill the booked shape-hole in your heart. the other ones are fairly average, but still worth reading if you’re in the fluffy mood.
yea there were some moments of A Pho Love Story that I really vibed with and others that just… weren’t it. I did love how hungry it made me tho.
yes! the first one is a bit rougher, but by the second one I was oddly invested lol. to be 100% honest with you, I have no idea what steampunk means (Eek!) but I can tell you it is sci-fi and set in the future with fancy space tech. I have no clue if that means steampunk or not, but hopefully that was helpful-ish????
ahh thank you so much! I’m currently working on memorizing a new speech so it’s feeling very real and very exciting eee
ahaha thank you both for the well April wishes and that spring-tactic pun! happy reading : )

      1. Aww thank you, I’m smiling so much now πŸ˜†. Ahh yes, bookworms and nerdy joy is the best combo. Sometimes a book doesn’t have to be revolutionary to be good, so I totally agree! πŸ™‚ A Pho Love Story was a good story, but boy oh boy did it drag out to no end. Ahhh no worries, steampunk/cyberpunk means stories set in worlds with a lot of inventions, robots, and such. They tend to vary a lot, and it’s quite a unique genre! Yes! It was helpful, and you’re spot on! Good luck on your speech, I wish you all the best!! Happy reading! πŸ’žπŸ’ž

        1. πŸ’™πŸ’™ (can that be a full sentence?? idk i’m making it a full sentence, but without punctuation because it looks weird eek). truly a wonderous combo! it really did. i could have done with out the third act break up as well. ahaha that makes sense. that was sort of my guess but i was like aliens??? idk mechanic stuff?? spaceships?? all of the above, none of the above?? so the clarification is much appreciated lol. ahhh thank you so much! happy reading to you as well πŸ€—

I will never stop being in awe of how you manage to read SO much in a single month πŸ˜‚ Everyone’s reactions to the ending of Aurora Burning is seriously scaring me, and I haven’t even started the series yet πŸ˜… And I loved the new review structure for You Have a Match πŸ˜„ Omg fellow musical fan (I got that Something Rotten reference!!) β€” I’m so happy to hear that your sketch comedy is turning out well πŸ₯°

And thank you so much for the shout-out! I really appreciate it πŸ’–

    1. thank you so much Abby! I really appreciate you saying that 😊 haha what can I say, speed reading is my super power lol. oh you most certainly should be scared, that ending brought nothing but pure unbridled PAIN and is hands down one of the most painful cliffhangers in the galaxy. absolutely insane, but also the book is really good lol.

ahh thank you so much! paragraphs looked big and scary so I figured, hey let’s do bullet points… might need to use that format again in the future! YESSS another musical theater fan *high five* something rotten is one of my all time favorite shows ahhh! do you have a favorite???

for sure! you’re post was 10/10, so I had to include it! hope you have a charming April, thank you so much for reading Abby πŸ’™

      1. Haha good to know! I’ll have to prepare myself before starting the series πŸ˜‚

Ahhh musicals!!! Hamilton will always be closest to my heart but my most recent favorite is Starry β€” which is criminally underrated!! But I also love Hadestown and Newsies and Something Rotten and In the Heights and…. yeah, basically every other musical I’ve ever listened to πŸ˜…πŸ˜‚

Thank you and no problem! πŸ₯°

        1. haha fair warning, no amount of preparation will have you fully prepared πŸ˜‚

got to love hamilton! ooo starry, is that any chance van gogh related or just some other star related thing?? i feel like i’ve heard of it, might need to give it a listen! and yesss hadestown, newsies, in the heights can’t go wrong with any of them lol!! another one of my favorites is prom (mostly because i’m an alto and can kind of sort of sing along to it without sounding like a dying crow lol). honestly just love the musical vibes as a whole haha!

          Liked by 1 person

          1. Ahh yes Starry is indeed Van Gogh related! It’s about the relationship between the Van Gogh brothers and their lives… okay, it sounds really boring when I put it like that πŸ˜‚ But it is SO emotional omg, I always end up crying when I listen to the soundtrack 😭 Ooh I’ve heard a lot of good things about The Prom, glad to hear it’s one of your favorites!! Ahahaha I feel that dying crow on a personal level β€” I’ve yet to find a musical that I can sing along to without sounding like one πŸ˜…

totally agree that follow your arrow had WAY too many hashtags – like what is even happening?? also yess i rated the entire s&b trilogy 3 stars – because it was just okay?? like that’s all it was. nikolai was the ONLY reason i kept reading haha but i’m super pumped for the show!! mt baby crowssss πŸ₯Ί im so happy you loved you have a match as much as i did!! πŸ’“

ugh yess. it was not needed and SO distracting. yess ok is a very accurate summary of the entire series. yesss we live nikolai, 10/10 best character in the series. yess so so SO ready for the show. all the teasers and stuff— I need it. I need it now.

for sure! I loved it, absolutely had to include it! happy reading and best wishes for April!!

    1. ahaha yes, shoutout to spring break for that! all around the Fable duology is brilliant, and I honestly can’t decide which book I liked better. I keep flipping back and forth but I love the world and the characters so so so much either way!!! I do hope you’ll love it as much as I did when you get to it!!

I think it is worth a read. I’m a big fan of the whole Once Upon a Con series for cute, nerdy, romance reads! if you like contemporary beauty and the beast retellings, nerdy/bookworm protagonists, split pov, sunshine-grumpy combined with rivals-to-lovers tropes, or library settings then you’ll probably like it. it’s not groundbreaking, but I’m glad I read it and liked it enough to reread it, so make of that what you will lol. happy reading!!!
