Eclipsed! // Mini Reviews of Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo, The Falling in Love Montage by Ciara Smyth, and I Love You So Mochi by Sarah Kuhn

Do y’all ever have a quote or line form a book that just kind of floats around in your mind? Kind of like getting a song stuck in your head… but with words. Everytime it happens the quote isn’t just floating there calmly relaxing, taking a vacation or anything. No, it reeks of attention seeking only child energy.

Let’s put it this way, if my mind were a public swimming pool, the quote would be the 6×6 giant flamingo floatie, that belongs in a lake but obviously isn’t in a lake, that can probably be seen on Mars. And for good measure let’s just say there are a half dozen small children screeching on top of it.

The quote in question is currently this charmer from the Renegades Trilogy:

“He blew his kazoo in sympathy”

I don’t why I think it’s so funny or why it has currently set up camp in my mind for that matter. Seriously, of all the profound quotes out there, of course that’s the one that I can’t stop thinking about. It’s not like I’ve read the series super recently or anything (I mean, November) so I have no clue why it’s gone full on super glue in my mind. I’m not sure if this is just a me thing or an everyone thing, so do let me know if this is something that happens to you as well.

Anyway… let’s hop into some mini reviews.

💫 I am so sick and tired of being in Alina’s head. I know, I know, typically I am a 1st person enthusiast but I just can’t do it here. The whining alone makes me want to throw something. I mean, it is a slight upgrade in comparison to book one, but still far too much for my taste.

💫 Mal was soso so annoying. I think this quote sums up his personality (or lack thereof) pretty accurately: “Might want to leave him alone… That type needs plenty of time for brooding and self-recrimination. Otherwise they get cranky.”

💫 I did like the climax. Honestly, the only exciting part of the whole book. The end was solid, and I do want to know what happens so I will probably keep reading (maybe??)

3 🌟 I liked Siege and Storm better than Shadow and Bone, but not by much. I enjoyed some of the character development and worldbuilding, but the rest left quite a bit to be desired.

💫 Sunshine-and-grumpy trope!!!! *continued screeching* This is literally one of my favorite tropes ever!

💫 The humor and the voice are an absolute yes. The dialogue was so snappy. I really love the snark, especially on Saoirse’s part. Peak humor.

💫 I really enjoyed the development of the side characters. I thought Oliver and Saoirse’s newly forged friendship was really well done. Oliver easily could have been written off as a rich party-goer, but I really appreciate some of the depth and characterization that was added.

💫 The ending was not exactly what I wanted it to be. In true rom-com fashion, you have your Third Act Breakup. They fight and make up, only not to get a happily ever after. Which I guess makes sense for the story that was being told, but it makes me a bit sad : (

3.5🌟 Overall, The Falling in Love Montage is a delightful rom-com. The humor was immaculate and I loved the fake-dating premise!

💫The humor in this book literally speaks to me. Not in a come alive, seeping into your mind one printed letter at a time sort of way, more like I connect with the humor. The rambly, awkwardly endearing self deprecation is everything I could possibly want. I don’t know how exactly to explain it, other than it is 10/10 amazing.

💫Character development at it’s finest. Kimi discovers so much about herself and her family and it’s beautiful.

💫 The enthusiasm and passion not only seeps out of the book through Kimi’s character and love for fashion, but also through the words themselves.

💫Ok, so that’s a meet cute if I’ve ever seen one. Honestly the relationship in this book is so adorable I can’t even—

4 🌟 Literally thank you so much to Saniya @ Sunny Side Reviews for recommending this book. It was literally so good and I don’t know why I didn’t pick it up sooner.

And with that, I’m just going to let that quote bounce around in my mind palace a bit more. At least until something else comes along and boots it out lol.

Have you read any of these books?? What did you think??

        1. glad to help!! it’s one of those tropes that’s not super widely advertised so you kind of have to hear about it front other peeps!! yes! and they know what people liked vs didn’t like in the book and can take ~creative liberties~ as they please. i just know i’m going to love it eee. for sure for sure, good idea : )
